Philip M. Stolz is a senior vice president of Hearst Television, Inc., formerly Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., based at the Company's New York City corporate office where he assists in the general management of the Company's station group, and directly oversees a portion of the Company's 29 TV stations.
Previously, Stolz was president and general manager of WBAL-TV, the Hearst Television, Inc. station in Baltimore, Maryland.
Stolz joined WBAL-TV in 1991 as vice president and general manager and, during his tenure, the station became Baltimore's #1 television station. Previously, he was vice president and general manager of WDTN-TV, Dayton, Ohio, which at the time was owned by The Hearst Corporation. Before joining WDTN in 1987, Stolz was vice president and general manager of KCRG Radio and Television in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and, before that, he was general manager of WQOW-TV in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He began his broadcast career at WXOW-TV in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he served as an account executive and sales manager.
Stolz is a former member of the NBC Affiliate Board, and served as chairman of its News Committee which among other duties oversaw the NBC affiliates' involvement in the NBC Newschannel service. In that role, Stolz was instrumental in the creation of a new governance agreement that created a new level of partnership between NBC and it affiliates and gave affiliate stations greater input and control over how affiliate video provided to the Newschannel was to be used. This new accord also created a shared profit split on an annual basis. He currently serves on the CBS affiliate board.
Stolz received a B.A. in communications from the University of Wisconsin in 1970.
Over the years, during his various station assignments, he has served on the boards of various regional and municipal chapters of the Urban League and United Way, and has served within a number of other local and regional charitable and civic organizations.
